Birds love flitting in and out of gardens that provide them with food. While nuts and seed are a vital part of their diet, they also love to snack on animal fats.
What do you need to make fat balls?
- Yoghurt pots
- Lollipop Sticks
- String
- Mixing Bowl
- Spoon
- Animal fat, such as lard or suet
Simply mix one part vegetable or beef suet to two parts bird seed in a saucepan on low heat. Gently heat until the components are blended together and remove from the heat. Once the mixture has cooled, scoop with your hands or an ice cream scoop. Place in the freezer to harden, and then place in the garden on a tray or on a special fat ball feeder.

- Leftover potato
- Pastry
- Cake
- Wild Birdseed
- Raisins and dried fruit (not coconut)
- Fresh fruit
- Oatmeal and Porridge Oats
- Breadcrumbs
- Cheese
- Nuts of all kinds
