Top Gardening Trends For 2022

Share

2022 may have gotten off to a tricky start weather-wise, but that doesn’t mean that the rest of the year will be quite as eventful. So, with the hope for better weather, people are considering what they want their garden to look like this year. Of course, we’re more aware than ever that the space outside of our homes is precious, so for many creating the perfect garden each year is a must – but what gardening trends and fashions can we expect to see in 2022?

What Gardening Trends People Are Looking For

According to gardening company Flymo, the top 5 searched for gardening phrases on Google in the UK are:

  • Which vegetables grow in the shade?
  • Which are the fastest growing vegetables?
  • How to get rid of weeds in your lawn?
  • How to grow herbs indoors?
  • When to play perennials? [i]

At this time of year, we tend to see the volume of searches online increase, as people start to wonder what they are going to be able to achieve with their garden that year.

Those new to gardening often worry that it is a complicated process or something above their skill level. However, anyone can create a garden as long as they research what is needed and take their time. Gardening is a skill that anyone can learn, and with plenty of information available online, learning doesn’t need to be complicated. Instead, it is about creating a garden that you are happy with and has made use of the skills you do have.

Gardening Trends for 2022

Gardening is a hobby that proves popular year after year, and there is nothing to suggest that 2022 will be any exception. Instead, people are already looking forward to the better weather and getting their garden prepared now to look its best throughout summer. So, let’s look at the gardening trends people might be trying out in their gardens this year.

Getting Everyone Involved

For a long time now, the garden has been a place to be sociable, especially when the warmer weather is here. This year, it is likely to continue to be a place that everyone wants to be and a place that everyone would like to be just how they want. When it comes to designing, creating and even getting their hands dirty, it is likely to be a team effort this year. We have learned to appreciate the outdoor space we have access to over the last couple of years, and as such, everyone is going to want a say in the type of outdoor space they have at home.

Growing Your Own

If Google search volumes are anything to go by, we’re going to see an increase in interest when it comes to people being able to grow their own herbs and/or vegetables. The great thing about growing your own produce is that different products need different conditions, so whatever type of garden you have and however much (or little) time you have to dedicate to gardening, there will be options suitable for you. So, as Google suggests, plenty of people are looking to grow herbs indoors, and others want vegetables that grow quickly, so different ways to achieve similar results are one of the great things about gardening!

Rented Garden Space

With people wanting to grow practical plants but not necessarily having the space to do so, we’re likely to see an increase in the popularity of renting allotment and garden spaces. Community gardens and allotments are already proving popular, and this is a trend that is likely to continue throughout 2022. Not everyone has access to the type of garden space they would like to grow what they need, so being able to access nearby space that gives them the freedom to do this is something that many will see as a positive and be keen to get on board with.

More Sustainable Ways of Gardening

As a nation, we’re becoming much more aware of our actions and the environmental impact these have – and gardening is no exception. Last year we saw sustainable gardening increase in popularity, and that is a gardening trend that is likely to continue this year. The good news is that being more environmentally friendly when it comes to your garden doesn’t need to be too much of a chore, and there are some really simple steps you can follow to create a much more sustainable outdoor space.

  • Plants – Using plants that are native to where you live and planting them at the right time.
  • Pest Control – Using organic methods rather than potentially harmful chemicals/fertilisers.
  • Conserving Water – Consider how to water your plants and where to plant them depending on how tolerant they are to very hot temperatures.
  • Making Your Own Compost – Use kitchen and garden scraps to create your own compost to save money and be more eco-friendly[ii].

Creating a Garden Unique to You

When it comes to interior design, most people are well aware that their home is a canvas to do with what they wish. Yes, of course, people follow interior design trends but actually, for most, it is more important to design and decorate a home that they love – one they feel content in and are happy to come home to. In the past, this feeling has mostly been reserved for decorating the inside of the house. But in 2022, we’re likely to see this extend into the garden space too.

Over recent years we have learned to love our gardens even more, and as such, we’re starting to see them as a space we should love and cherish – an extension of our home. The good news is that there are so many garden accessories and options out there that creating your own outdoor haven doesn’t need to be a struggle. Things you can look at for creating your own perfect outside space include:

Bold Choices

Alongside the confidence to create a garden space they love, people are likely to get involved in bold colour choices. There is something truly lovely about looking out of the window and seeing a range of colours greeting you from a garden space that you have created. This is something that people will be keener to see, as we work on gardens becoming a space that we love because they help to reflect our personality.

Bringing a Little of the Garden Inside

Although most people would love a garden, not everyone has a home with outdoor space available to them. Shared accommodation, blocks of flats, houses on new build estates and plenty of other accommodation options have no garden space at all, and in the past, this simply meant that people missed out on having their own garden. However, with people liking the idea of plants and growing things like vegetables at home, people are opting to bring a little of the garden inside. This could be that they opt to have some plant pots on a window sill, turn the spare room into a mini greenhouse or get inventive with flowers on a wall to create unusual décor. There are many ways to bring the garden inside so that you don’t have to miss out if your property doesn’t have a traditional garden space.

Creating Gardens in Small Spaces

Along the same lines, people without a traditional garden space will be keen to get involved in gardening trends. It is easy to assume those with green fingers will have access to large gardens, but that is not always the case. However, we’re going to see more people getting creative with things like balcony gardens and small patches of lawn outside houses. There are so many options for getting creative with gardening, which is great because it means that anyone interested in gardening can get involved.

Keeping Up With Gardening Trends in 2022

Of course, it can be hard to predict everything that will happen with gardening trends in 2022; because things can change quickly. However, things that we can be sure of include:

  • Sustainable gardening & growing your own products
  • Getting inventive with gardening space
  • Bright colours and bold choices

Everyone has their own idea of what it takes to make a perfect garden and what they want to see from their own garden space – and 2022 is going to be a year about exploring these ideas and finding the confidence to make them happen. Gardening trends are all well and good, but a big trend this year will be about following your heart and your own needs when it comes to creating the perfect garden rather than just following trends.
