You may already be dreaming of relaxing in the garden, reading a book or having a drink surrounded by the natural beauty of a good number of plants and flowers. It’s not too late to make a start on achieving this ambition, as there are many flowers which are fast-growing and can be in bloom in just a short space of time.

This blog runs through some of the best flowers that you can plant now, in time to fully experience them this summer. By planting these seeds and caring for them well (be sure to properly read all the instructions on the seed packet) you’ll have the ideal summer garden.

Marigolds

Marigolds burst into life spectacularly during the summer, appearing in different shades of yellow, orange and red. These are one of the fastest growing common garden flowers, with marigolds blooming within eight weeks of sowing. By placing them in well-draining soil in full sun is your route to best results. The common English name “marigold”, is derived from “Mary’s gold”, a name first applied to a similar plant native to Europe, Calendula officinalis.

Cornflowers

Popular with bees, these beautiful blue flowers are great at bringing a jaunty colour into your garden. The cornflower’s name comes from the fact it originally grew as a weed in the cornfields of Europe, but is now a popular ornamental plant. While the plant is known as the ‘blue boy’ or ‘blue diadem’ for its distinctive colour, cornflowers can sometimes come in white, pink, lavender and dark maroon.

Nigellas

The Nigella is also known as Love-in-a-mist or ragged lady. These grow in spring and start blooming in early summer. They are most commonly different shades of blue but can be white, pink, or pale purple, with five to 25 sepals. The petals themselves are located at the base of the stamens and are minute and clawed.

Petunias

Petunias have a great in-built self-defence mechanism against pests, which consequently makes them hugely popular with amateur and more experienced gardeners. Originally from South Americas, Petunias took their name from the French ‘petun’, meaning tobacco. While they can handle harsh conditions and hot climates, Petunias need at least five hours of sunlight every day and flourish in moist soil and are best grown from seed.

Poppies

The California poppy can grow from seed to flower in only sixty days. These stunning flowers need strong amounts of sunlight in order to flourish, so they’re perfectly at home in a west-facing garden. While some varieties of poppies are used in the production of drugs and food, the flowers of most poppy species are widely cultivated as ornamental plants, with the Shirley poppy being among the most successful.

Sunflowers

Given that these flowers are synonymous with summer, it’s no surprise that they are at home in a west-facing garden, able to absorb the afternoon sunshine. Sunflowers can take as little as three months to grow up to six feet in height. Sunflowers are famously easy to grow and they produce amazing results in any moist soil that’s in full view of the sun, they are a favourite subject for children. Consequently, cultivars of a range of shapes and sizes are able to be grown from seed.

Sweet pea

This fast-growing flower enjoys a good deal of popularity among gardeners due to its sweet-smelling aroma. Although suitable for west-facing gardens, they do not do as well in direct sunlight so be sure to place them somewhere cooler. Sweet peas come in a huge array of colours and patterns. Most will grow to five or six feet, but there are other, shorter varieties such as the “bush type” that are well-suited to containers.

The above are just a selection of popular flowers that will burst into life this summer. Their fast-growing nature and inherent beauty make them massively popular with gardeners, and if you get started soon you’ll be enjoying them in just a couple of months.

Enjoy all that your garden has to offer this summer. Once you’ve planted all your fast-growing flowers, you’ll want somewhere in which to sit and enjoy them. Fortunately, we have a fantastic range of garden benches in all shapes, sizes, colours and materials.

Our competitive prices make luxury garden benches affordable for most budgets.
