If you think of a traditional bench as old damp wood, a little chipped, worn and uncomfortable, it\u2019s time to look again. With so many different benches on the market nowadays, it can be difficult to make a decision about which type will suit your space. Luytens benches with their iconic, luxurious shape are not to everyone\u2019s taste with many of us preferring a <strong>traditional garden bench<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is A Traditional Bench?<\/h2>\n<p>Usually we think of a <a href=\"\/\"><strong>traditional bench<\/strong><\/a> as having flat, slatted wooden sides and are seen in churchyards, village greens and old school bus stops. These are certainly still popular, but many of them have begun to look a little worn and \u2018old.\u2019 They tend to have thin wavy arms and fairly low backs; not terribly good for use in practice or for very long. Chances are you\u2019d be ready for the bus or the cricket tea if you\u2019d been sitting on one of those!<\/p>\n<h2>Flat Armed Garden Benches<\/h2>\n<p>Are exactly that. Not that you might think of giving over all your attention to the flat arms, but in actual fact they do make a huge difference. Those of us who have purchased and enjoy our <strong>flat armed benches<\/strong> are now converts to the type. These benches have all the benefits of the traditional benches, exuding all the charms of yesteryear, but are more comfortable. They are easy to rest your forearm and hand upon and even makes resting your elbow more comfortable whilst reading the paper or current book. In addition to this, resting your cup of tea or coffee (or even glass of wine upon, past the yard arm!) is much easier and safer due to the larger, flat surface area. Despite the hard wearing teak\u2019s widely recognised popularity, many people choose to treat it with a coating (Teak oil is widely available) to extend the life and look of the bench.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Buy A Bench At All?<\/h2>\n<p>Traditionally benches were used to seat those less important (the chairs reserved for those in charge, hence the term \u2018chairman\u2019) and were therefore indoor pieces of furniture. However, through the passage of time benches have evolved, nowadays fulfilling a range of roles both indoors and out, social and workplace. Today, outdoor teak benches are certainly very fashionable and comfortable. They are good pieces for socialising; obviously accommodating more than one person and have many different cushions and covers to compliment them. These make the benches even more comfortable and protect the benches in inclement weather.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, garden benches can be used to create a statement in your outdoor space or to achieve a good resting spot somewhere away from the bustle of the house and no doubt all the jobs therein! Used in pairs or multiples, benches can create an intimate area in your garden or patio, perhaps to focus attention on a particular flowerbed or rockery.
